SWIMMING.

POOR PERFORMANCES IN ENGLAND.

(United Press Association—By Electrll Teleirmph—flonyriyhtA LONDON, February 27. The Amateur Swimming Association " directs attention to the deplorable times recorded Vy the English entrants, and also to the paucity of entries in , the men’s middle and long distance events. It points out that the mile championship, which is the blue riband of English swimming, secured only three entrants, of whom two started. The New Zealander, I>. P. Lindsay, alone completed the course, while the winner of the half-mile championship > was nearly one mir/uts outside the stan--1 dard. Tile committee declared that . the time had arrived when these re- , grettable features must be remedied. 1 " *

Ihe relay race also proved very excitmg, and its inclusion in future pro- ! grammes is assured. Although Main School established a slight lead in the second lap they were closely pushed ali the way, McCann just touching for Main. /

At the conclusion of the programme, .Hr H. H. Fraser (president of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre), presented the shield to Peggy Hurdlev, who received it on behalf of the West School.
