GERALDINE.

THE WEATHER. The dry fine weather, which has been experienced for the past few weeks, changed on Tuesday, when at 4.30 p.m. a slight drizzle set in. which continued until near midnight, the rainfall being ton points. Yestorday morning the sky was overcast, but as the day wore on, this condition was replaced by bright, warm sunshine, and the probability of rain seemed to be as far off as ever. This month 25 points have been registered, as compared with 192 points for February 1928, when rain fell on twelve days. MISSED THE ’BUS. Last Sunday Peel Forest was the scene of a slight misadventure, when a young man and a young woman, who were members of a picnic party from Ashburton, wandered away from their companions, and being overtaken by darkness, lost their way in the bush. Eventually they arrived at the spot from which they had set out. only to find that their companions had departed for home. The absence of tho couple was not discovered until tho picnic party reached Ashburton, when one of the party set out in a car for Peel Forest to seek for the wanderers. In the meantime the young man had managed to get into communication with Ashburton, from whence a taxi was sent to Peel Forest. The car and the taxi set off together, though neither driver knew the mission of the other until thev had arrived at their destination. Tho missing couple were driven home, where they arrived shortly after midnight, after a somewhat anxious experience. LICENSING. The expectation that there would not be a contested election for the licensing district of Temuka and Geraldine has not been .realised, as for the five seats there are seven nominations. Two more nominations—those of W. G. Gallagher (Ealing) and M .Maze (Pleasant Point), have been received, and this will necessitate an election. More varying types of nationality than would be found in Singapore, tho crossroads of tho world, are encountered on the big ferries that ply between San Francisco and Oakland. Evidence of this will be found in “Waterfront ■’ the First National picture, co- , starring Dorothy Mackaill and Jack Mulhall which comes to tho Municipal to-night. A considerable part of the picture was made m the 1 San Francisco Bay district, and some • of the action takes place aboard the . ferryboat Sacramento, one of the largest ferries afloat. “Waterfront , while essentially a farce comedy, embraces many thrilling moments and is a splendid picture.
