WAIMATE.

“THE MAN FROM TORONTO.” A party of amateur theatricals from Oamaru, under the direction of Mr A. Stanley Warwick, gave an enjoyable and meritorious portrayal of a comedy entitled “The Man From Toronto.” The artists gave uniformly good interpretations of the various characters, and the audience was not slow in showing appreciation of their efforts. The leading characters, Miss Daisy Catto and Mr Stanley Hook, received able assistance from the suporting members of the company, in Misses Doris Aitkenhead, Etta Walker. Alice Meredith, Jean Catto and Dorothy Cook, in the feminine roles, and Messrs A. S. Warwick and Graham Dickel in male characters. The company is assured of a largo measure of support any time it decides on a return to Waimate. BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was hold on Tuesday night, the Mayor (Mr Geo. Dash), occupying the chair. There were also present Councillors A. J. Kirby, F. R. Algie, J. Attwiil, W. Nelson, w. G. Paul and A. Lewis.

Me Master, Christchurch), formally presenting the property to tne borough. A letter conveying the thanks of the Council is to be forwarded by the Town Clerk.

A letter was received from Mrs P. McDonald in reference to filling in an old well with stones.

The South Canterbury Electric Power Board wrote stating that it was impossible to accede to tne Council’s request for a reduction in the minimum charge to consumers.—The letter was received. HARBOUR MATTERS. The Mayor reported that he had received an urgent appeal from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to attend a meeting of representatives of local bodies in Timaru on February 22 to protest against proposals from Wellington to abolish the flat rat© charges .and establish a lower charge at the four principal ports. The offect of such proposal, if put into operation, would be to reduce the business done at such ports as Timaru and practically put them out of action as profit earners. As this borough was a contributing body to tho Timaru Harbour Board, and would have to bear a portion of such losses as might be made, he attended, representing Waimate Borough and took part in the meeting of protest as desired. It was moved byj Councillor Paul and seconded by Councillor Nelson, that the Mayor’s action be endorsed, and thanks accorded him for his attendance at the meeting.

A lot of correspondence was read in reference to itinerant traders’ by-aws operating in various boroughs, and it was resolved to hand the correspondence to the Retail Traders’ Association.

Mr T. Frickleton, Orari, a returned soldier, applied for a license to run a pie cart in the bqrough. —Referred to the general committee for report. The committee recommended the acceptance of Mr J. Bryce’s tender of £B2, for the labour of laying a water main from Goldsmith to Paul Streets. The chairman was authorised to employ Mr A. Good to place the seating and springboard at the baths before the swimming carnival. The committee’s report was adopted.

WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported having considered a communication from Mr T. Dyer regarding the suggested road from Shearman to Harris streets, and advised that there is no ground for any action by the Council.—Report adopted. ELECTORS’ LIST. At last meeting the Town Clerk presented the borough electors’ list which the Act says shall bo made up on or before the 31st day of January, and shall contain the name of every person possessing any of the qualifications entitling an electo rtp vote. Three Councillors were appointed to examine the list and sign it, if correct. On examination the list was found to be short of 300 names of people whom the list of electors for tne Waitaki electorate shows to have the right to a vote in this borough. As the Act prescribes that the Council shall in March and before the fifteenth complete the list, it was suggested to the Council that no printing be done before that date, and that the clerk now add to the list the names of all people entitled to appear thereon, at least so far as is indicated by a comparison with the rpll of electors tor Waitaki.

It was decided to adopt this course. It was proposed that authority b» given the Water Committee to us© four tram rails in place of two in the boundary bridge at Relay’s, making it passable for light motor traffic.— Agreed to. It was decided that tenders be called for the erection of two such shelter sheds as that recently erected at ICnottinglv Park, one to be placed in Victoria Park at the motor camp, and one near the boundary bridge at Kelcy’s Bush.

Authority was given for the erection of swings and a fireplace near the boundary bridge at Kelcy’s, it being pointed out that no money was required for the purpose as the fixtures would b© donated and erected. Accounts amounting to £136 19s 9d were passed for payment. PERSONALS. Mr and Mrs F. Pollock, Waimate, have been visiting Geraldine'. Miss K. Wood has returned to Waimato from Timaru.
