Under tho auspices of the South Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, a very successful swimming carnival was held in the Century Baths. Craigie Avenue, last evening-. Weather conditions, though rather dull, were quite conducive to good swimming, and the programme provided spectators with an enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Long before the first race was timed to start, all seating accommodation was taken, the attendance being the largest in evidence, at a swimming carnival in Timaru, for a good many years. The appearance of Misses E. Stockley and K. Miller, Olympic representatives, and R. Sutherland, of Timaru, 220 and 440 New Zealand junior champion added additional interest to an already high-class programme. Miss Stockley won the 50 yards invitation backstroke handicap in a convincing manner. Possessing a beautiful style, this swimmer has all the attributes of a champion, and her victory was loudly applauded. Although not registering a victory, Miss Miller also showed herself to be a swimmer of exceptional ability, and she and Miss Stockley possess a style which gives an onlooker the impression that to swim is an effortless art. In his races, in which he several times just failed to make up his handicap, Sutherland displayed fine swimming. He was placed third in the 220 yards invitation handicap, which was won by the Timaru swimmer. W. Ramage. Ashburton took first and second places in the ladies’ diving, Miss B. Millichamp and Miss L. Copplestone receiving the awards. Miss Copplestone swam consistently throughout .the evening. Miss L. Hood, New Zealand champion lady diver, was a competitor in this event, but did not seem to adapt herself as to do full justice to her diving. Two Timaru competitors. R. Rodgers and H. Clarke were first and second respectively in the men’s diving, which was of an exceptionally high standard. Taken throughout, the carnival was a success in every way, and was a fitting reward for the work of an energetic committee, under Mr H. H. Fraser (president), and Mr W. Carlton (secretary). •

Starting punctually, the programme was put through mose expeditiously, little or no delay being experienced, this being much appreciated by the onlookers. Amongst those in attendance were several members of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, these including Messrs W. D. Bishop (president), B. O’Neil (secretary), F. J Dunn (treasurer), and C. Bryant (member of the committee). At a break in the programme, a welcome was extended by Mr Fraser, on behalf of the Timaru Association. Mr Fraser also thanked the spectators for their attendance. A pleasing incident took place when Mr A E. Horwell introduced R. Sutherland, of Timaru, who, at the recent New Zealand championships, at Wellington, won the 220 and 440 yards junior titles. On Mr Horwell’s call, Lhr6e cheers were given for Sutherland. Prior to the swimming of the last event on the card, Mr Fraser also introduced Misses Stockley and Miller. The Olympic representatives greatly delighted spectators with an exhibition swim, orthodox and fancy strokes learnt on their recent trip Home, these being executed in a perfect manner. The swimmers displayed the modern “crawl,” double oar, turn, backstroke, and slow motion, and were enthusiastically received. At the conclusion of the carnival, swimmers and friends were entertained at a dance in St. Patrick’s Hall. Tho swimmers were also treated to a muchappreciated supper.
