OBITUARY.

M. ANDRE MESSAGER. (United Press Association —By Elsotrls l olograph—Copyright.) PARIS, February 24. Tho death is announced of the composer, M. Andre Messager. MR HENRY NEES. The death occurred on Friday last of Mr Henry Frederick Nees, well known in Dunedin as a prominent member of the firm of Nees and Co. In company with his brother, Mr Bert Nees, he journeyed to Akaroa to witness the for the Sanders Cup, but during the return journey, when near Timaru, he became suddenly ill and was brought to Timaru, where he died. The deceased was 63 years of age. After serving his time in his father’s furniture factory as a young man, Mr Nees went to Australia-, and on liis return worked as a contractor, building several churches in the country round about Dunedin. He then tonic up dredge building, and built many famous dredges during the geld dredging boom. At the conclusion of the boom he went into business as an active member of the- firm of Nees and Co., remaining in that company until his death. He was a very keen yachtsimnn, being for two or three years commodore of the Otago Yacht Club. At that time he owned the third class yacht Waitiri, in which he sailed mai iv races, sometimes taking the boa-t as far away as Lyttelton to compete in yachting on that- harbour. Although for upwards of twenty years Mr Nees had not actually sailed in racing events, he was keenly interested in yachting movements on the harbour up till the time of his death, and was also known as an enthusiastic amateur gardener, bis garden at bis seaside residence at Broad Bay giving ample proof of bis ability in that direction. He was ex-president of the Orphans’ Club and also ex-president- of the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association.
