In order to cope with increased maintenance costs, the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday decided to increase the levy on the local authorities for the coming year to .30d in the £, | as against .2od for the past year. _ This means that the authorities will pay £114,530 this year, compared with t-(1 1,647 last year, an increase of £22,883. “If we keep to the old levy, we will end up the year with an overdraft of £40,000,” said the chairman (Mr W. Wallace). “I realise there will bo a great howl from the local bodies, hut I am prepared for that. We have to make ends meet.” Apart from maintenance costs, Hie principal item of expenditure for the coming year is £40,000 for an infectious diseases block.
