COUNCILLORS’ DISSATISFACTION. THE ENGINEER’S POSITION.- • Following their long in-committee meeting on Monday „ night, when-the Timaru Borough Council sat for Jy hours, considering ' matters in ;coijtodfction with the Engineer’s Department, the Council continued their deliberations in this respect yesterday, between noon and one o’clock, and at 5.30 p.m., sitting until 7.45 p.m. On resuming in open Council, Councillor T. W. Satterthwaite proposed, and Councillor A. Kennedy seconded That Mr Fox (Borough Engineer) bo asked to hand in liis resignation, and that if he fails to do so, He be given three months’ notice, of the termination of. his agreement, with the Council.” , ; ;

This was lost by 8 votes to 4, . the voting being as follows For ...tbe motion: Councillors Satterthwaite, Kennedy, Vinnell and Hawkey. Against: The Alayor, and Councillors Virtue, Innes-Jones, Hart, Hutchison, Gee, Thompson and, Foote.

Councillor G. D. Virtue proposed, and Councillor H. A. Innes-Jones seconded: — . -■ “That as the Council is very dissatisfied with affairs in the Works Department, it recommends that the Borough Engineer be advised tjjat. it tho present state of affairs is b?t materially improved in six. months ■ time the Council will strongly- consider the matter of asking for the engineer's resignation.”

Tliis was lost by 7 votes to 5, the voting being as follows: tor _ tne motion: Councillors Virtue, . ; InnesJones, Hutchison, Hart and flw Mavor. Against: Councillors Satterthwaite, Gee, Vinnell, Thompson, Foote, Hawkey, and lvennec.y Both motions .having been lost tne Council discussed the matter further, and it was finally decided that a definite poliev be framed for tlie engineer, and that he be given whole-hearted support in carrying it - v.v
