DARING BURGLARY.

CECIL WOOD COMPANY’S BUILDINGS ENTERED.

A burglary was carried out in Timaru shortly after midnight on Sunday, when the premises of the Cecil Wood Company, in Barnard Street, were broken into, and a safe, containing £l6/0/3, was taken. The first intimation of the burglary was received by the night watchman, who found all the doors to the four kiffices open, and the safe from the office of Mr Edyvean (works manager) pissing. He immediately got into toiv, c h with Mr Wood, who notified Detective Nuttali, Investigation showed that entrance to the office had been gained through/ a window off Barnard Street, a.' broken catch and marks made by a. lever showing this. The key to thepublic entrance to Mr Wood’s office was missing, and the private entrance door to the office was ajar. The hinges on the partition door to the workshops from the main garage had been tampered with, while the main garage door was also open. Traces at the rear of the garage showed that a car had been backed in at the rear of the Theatre Royal,, while the door there was also left open. Wheel marks showed down: the right-of-way into George Street. It is assumed that two men were connected with the burglary, as the safe, measuring 22 inches by 16 inches; was fairly heavy. To reach the car from where the safe, was taken, entailed a walk of about 50 yards, through the-main garage, the' perper trators evidently showing a good deaf of boldness ill carrying out their plans. . - ,r Mr Wood told, a reporter that the safe contained £l6/0/3, made up of notes, silver and copper; with the exception of a cheque for £3. Mr Wood was of opinion that some one knowing the run of the office was responsible for the burglary, as a till' in the works manager's office, also had been rifled, though a cheque had beeh left behind. Neither the safe in Mr Wood’s private office, nor that in the general office, both containing a considerable amount of money, had been touched. The doors of the offices and garage are tested every four to six .hours,: and were safe all the week-end until discovered after the visit. / The police have the matter in hand, but so far no developments have taken place.
