ST. ANDREWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

ANGLICAN TENNIS CLUB

It has been decided to form a tennis club in connection with the Anglican Church, and to utilise the courts at the Vicarage. A meeting for this purpose was held on Friday evening, when 20 members were enrolled. The vicar, Rev. J. Hay, was elected president, and Messrs J. H. Stowell and C. F. Higgmson vice-presidents. Mr J. Blank was elected lion, secretary, and a management committee of five was appointed. It was decided to open the season on Labour Day.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S DAY. In connection with the annual Young People’s Day, a special service was held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon. There was a large congregation. The ev. A. McNeur conducted the' service, while the sermon was delivered by the Rev. G. McNeur, moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. The sermon dealt mainly with the works of the foreign missins, and with the experience of years of missionary work in China behind him. The Rev. G. McNeur gave a particularly line address. LABOUR DAY RALLY. The annual Labour Day rally of the South Canterbury Presbyterian Bible Ciases will this year take place at St. Andrews. It is expected that over 200 members will be present. Provided the weather is fine, the services will be held in the open. It is expected that an inter-class sports meeting will be held at the park. FARMING NOTES. Wheat and oat crops now showing above ground are looking particularly well, and in most cases give promise of a good harvest. It is too early to anticipate the latter, however, as the intervening months between now and harvest may produce just ' opposite climatic conditions to those that the fanner requires. Things are looking splendid now, however, and optimism is the keynote of most farmers. Lainbin ghas practically finished, and reports to hand indicate high percentages, despite the mortality which has carried off a lot of lambs. There is a good spring in the grass, with the result that the lambs one sees around are fine healthy specimens. The weather has been excellent for tailing, consequently there have been few losses. Last year it will be remembered, taking was carried out in atrocious weather, and a considerable number of lambs perished.

PERSONAL. Rev. and Mrs A. McNeur and family and Miss M. Cockburn have returned from a week’s holiday down south. Mr Sewell, Dunedin, has been transferred to the local railway stalf. FUNCTION AT LYALLDALE. One of the best functions of the season took place m the Lyalldale School oil Friday evening, when the School Committee held a “free night.” The entertainment consisted of euchre and dancing, and there was a large attendance at both. The euchre prizes were won by. Miss N. Hoskin Ist and Mrs Hartnett (consolation); Mr John Barber st, and Mr Campbell consolation. A lucky table prize was won by Messrs S. Pye, I. Hall, Underhill and R. Pye. A Monte Carlo waltz, an innovation for Lyalldale, was won by Miss N. Hoskins and Mr Watson. Mr W. Barber supplied the music for the dance which concluded about 3 a.m. SEA FISHING. Local residents are again patronising the beach, and some splendid catches are being made. On Sunday there were over thirty engaged in fishing, and cod herring, skate and ling were being landed fairly freely. NOTES. A little girl named Joan Lyall, fell on some broken road metal and inflicted a nasty gash in her forehead. She was taken'to the doctor, who found it necessary to insert three stitches in the wound. It is stated that the rattle of cars over the Lower Pareora Bridge can be heard four miles away.
