INDIA’S WAR RECORD.
MEMORIAL UNVEILED IN FRANCE.
By Cable —Pros* Association—Copyright. ‘‘ The Times.’’ (Received Oct. 9th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. The Paris correspondent of “The Times,” states that Lord Birkenhead (Secretary of State for India), unveiling the memorial to the Indian troops, ereetejl at Rue de BoisLa Bassee-Estaires cross roads, Neuve Chapelle, the chief scene of the Indians’ exploits, said: “I saw them, and I can see them now, shivering in those early primitive trenches; knee deep in foul water, their features always wearing that mask of fatalism, giving the impression of pathos, almost poignant. The elements often broke their bodies, but their souls remained unconquered. In the sinister, bloody maelstrom, they met with steadfast eyes, the clash of a novel and horrible war, because of their inborn simple loyalty and perfect discipline.” The memorial consists of a 50ft. slender column, flanked by tigers. A circular wall is inscribed with the names of 855 6 Indian dead, of whom 4843 lie in unknown graves.
