CHALLENGE TO THE CHURCH.
Should Approve Dancing. VITAL CHANGE NEEDED. By o«ble—Prei» Aiioclallon —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cubl® Association. (Received October 6, 8.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 5. A challenge to the Church to change its attitude towards dancing was made by Sir Harry Verney at the Church Assembly. He said that young people would dance, and good luck to them I Why shouldn’t they? Instead of assuming that dancing led down the primrose path to an everlasing bonfire, the Church should treat it as an art to be encouraged, and throw open the church halls to dancing. If it didn’t, the public houses would be thrown open for dancers. Dancing at its worst was abominable, and at best, an old fine art.
Coincident with this, Canon Woods, speaking elsewhere, said: “It is up to the Church to throw its mantle over decent healthy dancing. The Church should provide opportunity for young men and women to meet in healthy conditions, instead of allowing them to be driven elsewhere.”
