BOWLING NOTES.

(By “Pavilion.”) The bowling .season has ended for most chibs and to-day will see the final for others. The. Kia Ton Club has arranged a pairs fuurney to completo the season, and as the green is in excellent condition a good afternoon's sport js assured, if'the weather is good. Top dressing has commenced on the Timnru green, which is being well scarified. Part of the green lias been sewn and is looking really well. The Ashbury green is also being top-dressed, and a good deal of work is being put into it. Tho same can be said of the West End green. D. Mtimios («) and A. Cullen are to be congratulated on the fine stall 1 tiiev made last Saturday against J. Guii 11 (s), and J. Moves, in the final fo: the Oiimarn Pairs Easter Tournament. All four players sent away good bowls, and the Ashbury pair added further laurels to the Ashbury crown, by winning this competition. Tt will be remembered also, that. A.shbury (represented by T). Wonzies and N.' ITamlyn) won the of champion pairs, dcleating W ist. End (D. Dewar and Wilmington! bv 11 points, idoimios lias proved to bo a good all-round sport, bowls, cricket, has excelled in on eh. good all-round sport; bowls, cricket,^ BRISTOL CUP. Parle, by winning six consecutive matches in tho Bristol Cup competiiton. have demonstrated their ability. They deserve a whole column for their achievement, which is a v ery fine one. The Clubs defeated by Park were Waimate, Kia Toa. Ashburton, "W e*t End, Ashbury, and Waimate (second natch). The total margin amounted :o 100 points, an average win of almost 2d points per malcli. The biggest win was against Ashbury—oO points—and the narrowest win against Ashburton —(i points. Cood luck to them; may 1 lew long hold the Cun. The Park Club can be congratulated on their initiative, and the resourcefulness displayed in having the new visitors’ hook signed by the Duke of York when his Royal flightless visited Timnru recently. As a result, the first signature in the hook is “Albert.”' Bowlers will he glad to know that president iShillito has recovered from the elfects of his recent operation, and heartily congratulate him on his recovery.

Mr C. W. Wood (fresh from winning laurels at the Timnru Club) has left on a trip to Melbourne. He will be away about two months.

The club competitions of the Ashbury Club -wore completed .just prior to the end of the season. The prize winners were as follows: —Kinks, W. Simpson (s). .T. Hamlyn, .T. Forrest, B. Triggs, 1; N. Edwards (s), B. Crisp, W. Tressider, G. Lewis (runners-up). Pairs, R. Prosser (s) and T. Hunter, 1; J. Hamlyn (s) and F. Spring (runners-up). Senicr championship singles, N. Thompson, 1; B. Ivehby (runner-up). Junior championship singles, A. Cullen, 1 ; G. Hero (runnerup). Manning Cup, A. Stewart, 1 : J. Hamlyn (runner-up). Colts, W. Tressider, T: .T. Forrest (runner-up). A s'oeial hold last Saturday was a most successful function and was well attended. The Timaru Cluh's prize presentation took place last Saturday. The prize list lias already been published in the “Herald,” together with an account cf the function. A controversy is being waged in the columns of a Christchurch daily on the subject of rolling. Some favour very hoavv rolling, and others just as forcibly argue that heavy rolling is detrimental to the green. Personally, 1 believe it is. Tom Robertson, a past president of the English Bonding Association. savs: “Besides cutting the grass, scything or mowing serves a very useful purpose in opening up the roots of the grass, so that air gets at them, hut as a rule this benefit is verv soon nullified through the rol'er being used immediately after the rutting is done. Now this is a verv great mistake, ns when the grass is rut the opnosite way to the plav, there is no need for the roller to he used that- day. unless on very sner'al occasions. T sho-'ld recommend that m rol'er be used over 2J cwt. A heavy roller is the root of verv many troubles, more especially when the grass is moist wbrni rolled.” There is a variety of opinio* on the matter, and both sides are. of course, convinced thev are right. A pond deal depends on the- nature of the turf, but it seems to nw Flint linhfc rolling is far ""ore offeotb'n, and does mcq harm to the green than heavy rolling.

CENTB E COMPETITIONS. Thu Centre will shortly consider the arrangements for next season’s competitions. An eliort is being made to make a kmr or six-rink championship in place of the eight-rink one, and it is also proposed tci drastically alter, or eliminate altogether, the Shield competition. As Temuka and Geraldine have again decided tor the hall-holiday on Thursday, there will he no alteration in regard to the status of Thursday and Saturday clubs. The idea of making a “town’’ and a “country” section for the Bristol Cup is gaining favour, and if carried out will, J think, be of considerable benefit. _ It will mean that Thursday clubs will oppose Thursday clubs, and Saturday clubs will oppose Saturday clubs, except in perhaps one game, when the winner of one section meets the first club in the next sccLion. 1 believe the difficulties in the way will disappear if an earnest endeavour is made to find a solution.

Jn the interests of small clubs, i.e., clubs with a small membership, a four l or six-rink championship (the former preferred) will be a distinct advantage. The elimination (for a season or two anyhow) of the Shield competition, will enable clubs to boost their own club competitions, and open the way for more “friendly” matches.
