OLD MAN’S DEATH. B j Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 29. An inquiry into the death of Timothy Hartnell, aged 66, an old age pensioner who died suddenly last night at his place of residence in Lincoln Road, was opened by Mr Lawry, S.M., this afternoon. Evidence was given that deceased came home in the evening, under the 'influence of fi.juor. He* had some sort of a seizure, supposedly a fit. ft was apparently assumed that the man had over indulged in liquor, which ho had done on other occasions. NVlien liis condition appeared to be serious, the police were called. Sergeant Burnett arrived and found the man dead. , .vsked by the Coroner why the police were sent for, ami not a doctor, Joseph Grafton, with whom the deceased hoarded, said: “He was pretty drunk. I have seen him lie on the bed in a drunken state before, and I thought the police would be better.” The Magistrate adjourned the inquiry, to await the result of the po-' mortem examination. ASPHYXIATED. By Telegraph—Press Association. FEILDING, April 29. Tragic circumstances surrounded th* deatii of James Louis Raine (40), Kimbollon. He had evidently keen seized with an epileptic fit to which lie was subject. While alone an the house, he had fallen, face .dow n" aids, into the lire, which he had just lighted. He was found dead with liis neck on the- fire bar, and his face over khe fire. The medical evidence was that death was due to asphyxia. Deceased was unmarried, and uvea alone. ■
