BOROUGH COUNCIL'S OPPORTUNITY.
To Die Editor of the “Timaru Herald.” Sir, —The citizens of Timaru have elected Councilors from whom they hope to get more businesslike methods than have prevailed in ihe past. Is it too much to ask that these newlyelected Councillors treat the citizens’ money with the same respect as they would their own. The way the public funds have been thrown away, in full view of the pub'ie, would be amusing, if it were not rather appalling. How can six or seven men clean the sides of roads with shovels when almost touching each other. Three shovelfuls and their hit is done, and lately several men, with brooms, have- been sweeping grave l , at the rate o: -iite a stroke every five minutes. Would any man tolerate this with his private funds. It is not. only wrong done to the people, but wrong done "to the men by spoi'ing their morale. They are only human, and if they find that they can get 16s a day (or whatever it is), without giving a fair equivalent of work, can one blame them P The fault lies first with those who are responsible for getting the work done. —I am, etc., CITIZEN.
