PROVIDORING.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.”
Sir, —In your valuable paper some little time ago, attention was drawn of the public to the fact that one of H.M. -warships—the “Diomede” —securing supplies from Chinese, when white purveyors of the same supplies, and at equivalent cost, wero shut out. The same applied to the present visit of H.M.S. “Veronica,” when the man from the Orient was favoured in preference to leading providores, wllo at least depend on the waterfront for the major part of their living. What is the reason? Apart from the present strained relationship with China, surely in this country a white man should have preference, when liis prices and goods arc on the same scale as his yellow _ opponent. I have the best authority in stating that tho White man’s quotation was on the same basis as he Ch inese. Personally, I am not antagonistic to the men from the East, but surely your own colour should have a little consideration.—l am, etc. RETURNED SOLDIER.
