PRISONER ESCAPES

CHRISTCHURCH. March 17
On March 8, George Sudden ran away from a labour gang at -the Papafua prison. He -was working a little apart from tlio other convicts, when he suddenly bolted Ho reached cover, but was recaptured, after a chase. Thus was his Second attempt to escape. Sudden was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with escaping from prison before the expirv of Ins term. Accused pleaded guilty. Superintendent Leggett said that the prisoner had ran away, because lie considered that he should have been released earlier. The penalty for such an offence, lie suggested, should be severe. , , Sudden was sentenced to stx months imprisonment, to be cuniulative on. the present sentence.

William Mosdell was charged to-day with impersonating a member of the Police Forcle.s Lena Dobbs (17) said that while sitting on the beach at Sumner with a man named George Hayward, accused represented that he was a policeman or beach patrolman, and spoke to them. He said later to witness that lie could get her out of the ease, but she must kiss him. Witness refused, and becoming frightened went into a shop. Hayward said accused said he was a detective.
Accused denied the charge, and said he had not been at Sumner for 15 years. Accused, was fined £25, and costs, the Magistrate remarking that the circumstances were very had indeed,, and accused deserved gaol.
