MECHAN ICS’ ’IN STIT UTE. The annual meeting of the Mechanics’ Institute was held on Tuesday evening, when the president (Mr L. H. i Orbell) presided over a small attend- ! a nee. | Mr D. Alexander (lion, secretary) i presented the annual report and bal- ! once- sheet, the latter showing a leredit of £33 Os Gd, which was conj sidered very satisfactory. ? The report .-stated that members ’ subscriptions showed a slight decrease j over those of tile previous year. The | annual grant (£5 IDs) was received : from the Cleraldine County Council, . and £lO Ss 5d was Education Department. The comI lnittee liad been in touch with the j Carnegie trustees with a view of ob- * taining a grant: for building a new i library. The trustees regretted that { owing to heavy demands no more money j was available. During the year 35 j new bocks were purchased. On the motion of Messrs J. Smith j and 11. Philp, the report and balance j sheet were adopted. | The following eommiltee wore elected i for the ensuing year:—President, Mr ; L. H. Orbell; lion, secretary. Mr D. i Alexander: committee, -Messrs ,1. S.
j Smith, R. J. Russell, A. T. Langford, I H. Philp, and J. Philp. | Mr P. Surridge. was elected enroi taker.
j A vote, of thanks was passed to Mr | C. E. Shallcrass (Timaru) for his gift ! of playing cards for the library. Thanks I were also accorded Mr 11. J. Op:ie lor his services to the library over a number of years; also to Mr T. Lnngi ford (auditor), to Mr D. Alexander i (’secretary) and Air Orbell (’president). Special mention was made to the work ' Messrs J. Smith and D. Alexander , had done in renovating the reading room.
i At a committee 'reeling held after the annual meeting, accounts to tho amount of £3 13s 8d were passed for , payment.
Other business was left in abeyance till the next committee meeting.
