A WARM RECEPTION.

An official visit to South Canterbury 'by their Excellencies Sir Charles and Lady Alice Eergusson commenced yesterday, when the Vice-ltcgal party were met at the station in the afternoon, on their arrival from Wellington, and were welcomed by the Mayor and Mayoress, Air and Airs G. J. Wallace. In the evening their Excellencies, accompanied by Captain C. J. VernonAVentworth, were the guests oi the citizens at an informal gathering held in the Bay Hall, when the opportunity of meeting the citizens of Tiniaru was readily availed of by their Excellencies. in extending a hearty welcome to their Excellencies, tho Mayor, Mr G. J. Wallace, said that in expressing his delight at the pleasure of .again meeting their Excellencies, he was sure lio was expressing tho wish of every citizen in Tiniaru. (Applause.) Although lie understood that it was the last official visit Sir Charles and Lady Eergusson would pay to Tiniaru, ho hoped that they would seo them again on many other occasions, and in that connection, would like to remind their Excellencies of the many beauty spots in the district, and also of tho splendid sport that was available. The citizens were all deeply indebted for tho opportunity of meeting them again that evening, and of renewing tho friendships so firmly established on their previous visit. (Applause.) Ho hoped that the weather would bo favourable, not only for'their benefit, but also tor tlie sake of the citizens and children oi the other centres to bo visited by their Excellencies.'. ■ Referring to the children, Air Wallace said that it the children could only be privileged to hear again such fine addresses as were delivered to them- on his last visit, tlio influence of His Excellency upon tho Dominion 'would-indeed bo deep and .very lasting. Air Wallace concluded by again extending a hearty welcome to the town, and thanking His Excellency for ‘ tho privilege conferred upon the citizens in the opportunity offered of meeting him again. (ApUlion rising to reply, His Excellency was greeted with loud and sustained applause. He said that it was very difficult to realise that almost twelve months had elapsed since his last visit to Timaru, although he had to confess that he had since passed through once or twice on tho train. Remembering the very happy days spent m limara last year, they came back with tne feeling that they had come back amongst friends. In regard to his addresses to the children, His Excellency said it was very difficult m going round the schools not to repeat himself, and when the kind gentlemen of the Press so faithfully recorded eveiything he said, it made it all the more difficult. (Laughter ) Sinco Ins last visit to Timaru, he had seen quite a lot of New Zealand, and he was just beginning to realise how big it really was; in fact, he could not think liow people referred to it as a little country. Ho" had now been in New Zealand for two years, and ho had not finished Ins round of visits yet. His term of office was only for five years, and ns far as lie could see, before he completed his first round of visits, lie would Have to commenco his farewell tour (Laughter.) During his tour he had also visited the Islands, and it had been a wonderful experiencce, if onljr for-the sake of seeing the. great administrative work being carried out therp, by Now Zealand. Before leaving AVellimHon the previous evening, lie had read - remarks made by M wdtom scientist, who, m giving his i m P ies Kions of tho Islands, ho was sorry eav had drawn a very unfavouiab comparison between British and Gercontrol. He could only assnnio that that gentleman s material fro which ho based his remarks was very out-of-date.
