PERSONAL.

Mr J. Kennedy, Mayor of Geraldine, was in Timaru yesterday. Messrs H. M. Stonyer, F. H. Symons and R. Aiken left yesterday for Gore. They expect to return on Saturday. Commissioner and Mrs James Hay, the new heads of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, arrived in Timaru yesterday, as did also Colonel Knott and Brigadier Walls and Wallace.

Mr W. Thomas, who underwent a serious operation, for appendicitis in Paris, where lie was detained for two months, expects to leave England on his return to the Dominion on October 16th.

The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, who entered Waipukurau Hospital about a fortnight ago to undergo a slight operation, has recovered sufficiently to enable him to leave today for Wellington. The Governor-General, who was accompanied by Her Excellency, visited Mrs Massey at her home at Wellington yesterday, morning, and held aj private investiture, at which His Excellency invested Mrs Massey with tlio insignia of Dame of the Grand Cross of the Most Excellent order of the British Empire, an honour which was conferred upon her by the King , oil the occasion of His Majesty’s birthday. Mr and Mrs E. B. Cooper, and Miss Alice Cooper, will leave Teinuka to-day for Alford Forest, to attend the Jubilee celebrations in connection with the A’ford Forest and Springburn Schools. Mr Cooper is the sole surviving partner of the firm of Cooper Bros., who built the schools fifty years ago.
