OPENING CONCERT. The opening concert for the 1926 season given By the Timaru Ua-tholio Choral' Society attracted a large attendance, at St. Patrick’s Ha.fi, Browne Street, last evening, i when items by'the Society, interspersed with numbers by well known local artiste provided a most enjoyable entertainment. . In its various numbers the choir gave evidence that in the interval since its inception stead progress has been mao© uiider-good, tuition. Attacks and releases were cleanly handled and with due attention paid to light and shade some pleasing performances were given. “Softly Fall tlie Shades of Evening (Hatton), was rendered with very nice effect, the shadings being sliowii bv a choir under excellent control. To lhe Death” and Soldier’s Chorus,” from Faust were also given with appropriate spirit and effect. The other choir numbers “Hail to the Redding . Morn, “Stars of the Sunny Night,” Hoy Diddle Diddle,” (Air A. C. Mclnnes, soloist), “Song of the A r olga Boatmen, • “Old Alother Hubbard,” and “A Perfect Day”, were also contributed with equal success, and in a manner which reflected great credit upbn all concerned end especially the conductor Mr A. C. Alclnnes, who at all tunes showed line control. The assisting artists Air G. H. Andrews, (songs), Aliss C. Flamank, (songs), Aliss K. Byrne, (violin solo s), Mr AV. Miuehan (humorous recitations), and an instrumental trio, Misses K. Bvrne (violin) P. Ward (’cello) and r. Sullivan (piano), provided very capable support, all itmes being warmly applauded. In addition .to providing accompaniments, Aliss P. Sullivan L. 1.C.L., L.A.8., nlso played’ as a solo number Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude ill G Alinor,” which proved a most artistio contribution to the programme.
