Mary, Dowager Countess of Seafield, has been awarded by the King’s Bench £IOOO damages for libel, and her daughter Nina, Countess of Seafield, £SOO against George AY ilberforce Grant, as the result of a letter he wrote to the editor of the Strathspey “Herald,” alleging that Nina was not the daughter of the Dowager and that the latter was guilty of gross imposture in putting her forward as the Countess. The matter arose out of a claim in the Scottish Courts by .Alexander Grant, that the eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh Earls of Seafleld had no title to the Earldom, but that Alexander Grant ought to be the eighth Earl. Counsel explained that the eleventh Earl married Mabel Townend, of New Zealand in 1398, hut no child was horn to them till tdQfl. Counsel for defendant said the latter apologised for repeating the tittle tattle of a lady s tea party. Defendant, who was a retired civil servant, had clone a foolish tiling, and would have to suffer.
