WASHOUT IN WAIRARAPA.
THROUGH TRAFFIC BLOCKED. 13y Tcle^miid —Prtss Association. WELLINGTON, May 1. A washout oil tlie Wairarapa line to .the. north of the Summit lias blocked all through’ trains' until Monday. Trains will in the' meantime run’only to Cross Creek from Wairarapa, and a- full service will he maintained ■ to Upper 11 tit I, but no trains will go further than that from the Wellington side. Heavy rain last night, somewhat in the nature of a cloud burst, blocked two culverts on the north (Wairarapa) side of the tunnel with debris,- with theresult that they were carried away. The lirst washout is about half a. mile from the tunnel. The track, apart from this, appears to he undamaged, hut it is estimated, that there are about 1000 tons of mud and debris to be cleared, after culverts are repaired, before traffic can be resumed.
A special work train with a gang of men left Wellington at 7.45 a.ill. today to clear and repair the track. At 10.30 tlie sun was shining again, so that work can proceed in favourable circumstances, and it is anticipated that full traffic will bo reinstated by Monday.
