' Bright sunshine prevailed after about ten o’clock, with just sufficient rear wind in the afternoon to liavo a ‘‘kick” in its tail and catch the unwary as they came back to longer ranges of the opening match of the B series. In the opening match in the afternoon scoring was “very hot,” especially at 500 and 600 yards, at each of which rangcs several' possibles were recorded. Masefield won the match with a scoro of 101 out of 105, made up as follows: 33 at 300 yards, 35 at 500, and 33 at 600. H. Donald was runner-up with 33, 33, 34—100. A tyro from Christchurch who headed that class made 33, 34, 33—<3.00, beating the B grade*leader (Drennaiif by one point, although the latter made a possible at 500 yards. Addressing the competitors before they moved off to the firing this morning, Colonel R. Hughes, president of the Association, said it was evident that the meeting would take a ttyy longer to complete than was anticipated. It could not 'finish before Saturday. In view of the large entry more money had been added to the prize list in the service series, and £SO to the King’s Prize Match, so that all the final fifty would get at least a pound each.
