There were excited scenes in the Chamber of Deputies during the debate on the Syrian situation, in Avhich the opposition launched some fierce denunciations of General Sarrail’s policy. General Sarrail was present in the gallery, and several times M. Painleve protested against personal attacks. Finally M. Herriot had to suspend the disorderly sitting. A local vernacular paper re-ports that Emir Taher has gone to Soueictatlie capital of Jebel-Druse, to consult the Si., can Pasha El Atrash, the JebelDruse leader, in regard to the conditions of peace. Emir Taher is a Moslem, and has been prominent in protecting the Christian quarter of Damascus from the Moslems in the recent disorders. Undoubtedly an atmosphere ot peace is developing with the people. .There is growing confidence in M. de Jouvenel’s pacific endeavour. Important developments may be expected shortly. Meanwhile, however, it is reported from Aleppo, that the northern frontier is becoming very restive, bands being formed on the Turkish side.
