HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Timaru High School Board was held yesterday. Present—Mr J. Bitchener, M.P. (chairman), Mesdames B. H. Low and W. Raymond, Messrs W. F. G'heverton, W. D. Campbell, H. H. Fraser, T. Lyon, W. D. Rovell, and L. J. McGregor, Dr. G. E. Gabites, and Commander G. Dennistoun. CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The chairman reported having visited the Boys’ and Girls’ schools. The work at both institutions was progressing very satisfactorily. The grounds were in splendid order and left nothing to be desired. The new open-air classrooms at the Boys’ School were a decided acquisition, and were better than anything they had had previously. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee’s _ report stated that the question of junior high schools had been discussed very fully at a special meeting, at which Miss Barr and Mr Thomas were present. It was unanimously decided that application be made to the ♦fueation Department for the _ establishment of junior high schools in Timaru, these to be run in conjunction with, the'existing high schools. With reference to the proposed additions to the Boys’ School, it was decided to ask the Department to supply the required , accommodation. The question of 'appointing a teacher of calesthenics at. the Girls’ School had been discussed with Miss Barr, and it was resolved to appoint a- teacher in that capacity: It was further agreed to expend up to £l5O for the purchase of a new piano and linoleum for the Girls’ Hostel. , The committee recommended that the work of removing stumps and. trees at the back of the Girls’ School be carried out as soon as possible. Accounts amounting to £3ll 2s 9d were approved for payment. j The report was adopted. j JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS. 1 The Director of Education (Mr J. Oaughley) wrote in connection with the proposal to establish a junior High School in Timaru that owing to the large number of applications received the ' whole question would be considered in the near future by the Government, when a final reply in each case would be given. Any building schemes that had been der ferred, through the consideration 'of these proposals, would be dealt with as soon as possible, irrespective of the junior high school proposed. The letter was received. ADDITIONS FOR GIRLS’ SCHOOL. * At the last meeting of the Board, the secretary was instructed to again write to the Director of Education, stressing' the necessity _ for pushing along the work of erecting additions " to the Girls’ School as speedily as possible. A reply had been received to the effect that tenders would be called in December, but a definite date for the commencement of tho work' could not be given. APPOINTMENTS. „ The following appointments were made:—-A. grade position, Mr.D; S. Kemshed, M.A.; B. grade, Mr N. Moore, M.A.; C. grade, Mr W. W. Horwell; D. grade, Mr W. Crawford, M.A.
