It is revealed that M. Loucheur only resigned when M. Briand toid him that otherwise the President would demand the resignation of the whole Cabinet.

Senator Doumer held the same position in 1895, after which he,was for five years Governor-General of ludo-China. His last office was Finance Minister under M. Briand in 1921. He has a wide reputation as a sound financial authority, on somewhat conservative lines. The franc recovered two points on M. Loucheur’s resignation. The whole of the evening press predicts that M. Doumerts appolnt■ment will prove a short-lived stop gap, followed by another crisis.
