There passed away in Christchurch on Tuesday bast, somewhat ****>£ William Greene, artist, vno was 0 wol‘ known in South Canterbury; and especially in Timaru, vmcre hc ivixl for many years, following bis calling as on m , • b. “'vi,. f'l.ppii was art master at the ;r rtl ’„ -iris’ Miob School, at the Timaru Boys’ High School and at the Timaru Technical School for a long per od? and ho also taught at various centres throughout South Canterbury. Air Greene’s work is highly esteemed in* the Dominion, and there are examples in the Christchurch Art Gallery and other galleries in this country. He specialised in animal painting, ana v : m most successful in depicting the strenuous side, of art, showing horses engaged in hard toil in the slung e pit, river bed, or harvest field. He had a happy gift in representing muscular action in his subjects. Mr Green spent his youth in Dunedin, and came to Timaru. About live years ago he went xo Cnnstchurch, Where he took up the position of art instructor at the Christchurch liainiiig College. He was a man of retiring disposition, hut he had many warm friends among all classes of the community. Ho never enjoyed robust health, but Ins physical infirmity did not damp his amiable character.'
