SUGGESTED SANATORIUM AT HADLOW. THE PROPOSAL FURTHER _ . The South Canterbury Hospital Board have had under consideration for some weeks a proposal to purchase a site'at Hadlow on which to provide a sanatorium for consumptive patients, whose cases suitable for the sanatorium at W.aipiata. At yesterday’s meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board this matter was again under discussion, when it was stated that the Director-General of . Health (Dr. T. H. A. Valintine) had not sanctioned the proposed site. The chairman (Rev. T. W- Potts) gave a verbal report on the Waipiata Sanatorium, and said lie was pleased id say ’ that patients were doing well there. He hoped that very shortly there would, bo some discharges of South Canterbury patients from the institution. It was regrettable that more accommodation could not be provided, and it was regiettable that so y many had to be placed on the waiting list. Mr G. Dash moved to rescind the resolution passed at tliei previous meeting of the Board, that they purchase a property at Hadlow for a sanatorium. He said that Dr. Y 1 aimtine had made statements which were not expected from a man in his posi-j tion. The Board thought that this she would be a very suitable- one. - Mr E. Hardcastle said the Department had no definite policy for T.B. cases. There was a sanatorium in Hawke’s Bar, and this and others in the North Island were not nearlv full. The North Canterbury Hospital Board, Amder n D r - B’ackmore. had done a lot to fight the disease, hut unfortunately fdr Canterbury there seemed to he an unusual amount of the disease there. He thought that South Canterbury was in just as had a predicament and all that they could do was to try and save a few of the unfortunate patients by sending them to Waipiata. He was sorry that he had not been present when the conference had taken place with Dr. Valintine. The chairman assured Mr Hardcastle that the matter would not be drooped. The motion pronosed hv Mr Dash was carried, and further discussion of the subject took place in committee.
