Four thousand unemployed miners, accompanied by many women, invaded the Lanchester County (Durham) to protest to the Boards of Guardians against a resolution to abolish relief to the able-bodied. The deputation told the Board that the demonstrators would not permit the Guardians to leave till they got satisfaction. They were destitute to the point of desperation. The Board decided to grant immediate relief.
The chairman previously told the Board that apart from a loan of £43,000 they were overdrawn to the extent of £39.
