FARMERS' UNION.

ALBURY BRANCH. A meeting of tlie committee was lield in the Library Hall, Albury, on Monday. Present: Messrs D. Angland (chairman), J. McCort, F. H. Smith, R. Fraser, Tas. Smith, J. Macaulay, M. Reilly, R. G. Gaihsford, M. Casey, J. Imrie and A. Thoreau (secretary). Mr McCort congratulated the chairman on his accession to office, and hoped he would do as good work as his predecessor. Mr McCort also took the opportunity to thank Mr Macaulay for his past services 'as chairman of the branch, these having been given at a great sacrifice of both time and money by Mr Macaulay. The South Canterbury Executive wrote stating that the price of wheat had been fixed for the 1926 crop, on the understanding that farmers would grow sufficient wheat for the Dominion's requirements. The chairman asked Mr Macaulay to report on matters in this connection.

Mr Macaulay gave a detailed report on the position leading up to the fixing of the present prices, and also regarding the marketing scheme. At present he thought it wise to stick to the scheme for marketing wheat only, and later on other kinds of produce could be added. Several members thought the time ripe to consider the marketing of wool. The meeting agreed to support the idea of forming a wheat marketing scheme first.

The chairman said that he had seen it stated that the world’s shortage of wheat was 147 million, bushels.

The secretary brought under the notice of members the fact that a farm school was to be held at Pleasant Point on June 29 and 30, and asked members to support the school. The syllabus was read to the meeting. Members agreed that the alteration in the Fairlie train service should be subject to considerable speeding up, as the evening train was now running very late. Members were given details of the several co-operative purchasing schemes that are in vogue with a view to securing for farmers substantial concessions on their purchases.
