' There was some difficulty in obtaining a suitable volunteer to undertake the duties of hon; secretary to the Association caused by-the resignation of Mr G. A. Hansard. A. compromise was effected by one of the: qualified gentlemen present undertaking to. assume the duties of secretary and treasurer pending the anpoihtment of someone to the'permanent position. As the funds of the Association are in an extremely low condition, the matter of making an appeal to the various organisations for financial, assistance to this worthy cause was referred to a suh-committeo to be dealt with in the near future. The present location of the W.E.A. looms being deemed undesirable, a subcommittee consisting “of Messrs Si Lang and G. T. Keller, was appointed to report on the matter at the' next meeting. Mr Ti. Miller reported that the outlying’ districts were going ahead with tuoir classes, Geraldine a-lid , -Waimate being especially good. Eairlie was numerically weak, but had promise o£ support a little later. Tno Timaru classes of literature and sociology .were in a flourishing state. 1 ' Mr Geo. Manning, the Organising Secretary,to the Canterbury Executive Council, explained 'the outcome of the recent Auckland conference of the W.E.A. A Dominion conference r was in ’ future to' be re-established/ and a now constitution set up. All subcentres were to be enabled to send forward such delegates as they wished to appoint, thus enabling direct representation. The Government had recently granted £1250, of which £2oU chine to Canterbury—not enough to liquidate all liabilities, but 'nevertheless a welcome grant. Mr Manning pointed out that donations as such were subsidised £ for £. Mr Manning made a fervent appeal to the people of Timaru for financial support, and urged the economy, of■’ promulgating cultural matter as, tending to the welfare of the community.
