In completing the ascent of Mt. Cook in 14 hours 35 minutes on Friday, last, Mr Jack Ross, of Wellington, and guides Milne and Williams reached within 15’minutes of the record. The ascent was of unusual interest in that it was the first occasion in which skis have been used for the climb during the summer months, skis having been previously used during the winter months by Mr R. L.'Wigley. On the. return trip a very close call ' was experienced by guide Milne while skiing down the Linda Glacier. Suddenly confronted by a gaping crevasse 30ft in width the guide had no option, but to essay the jump; this he succeeded. in doing, landing safely, but with inches only to spare. .■ :
