The latest despatch from Colonel Norton, leader of the Everest Expedition, states that two desperate' efforts were made to reach the summit, during which a . world altitude was made, culminating in the tragedy. 1 ' , The first attempt was made by Norton and Somerville from the camp at 23,000 feet. This party, without oxygen, reached within 600 feet of the summit. Somerville almost collapsed, and Norton was able to go only a feet ! furfher: KC " When returning to camp they found Mallbry~dnd‘lrvine determined to make the. attempt with oxygen. They were last seen'going strong 600 feet below the summit.
