(From Our Own Correspondent). HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL. . On End ay evening the Temuka District High'School held a progressive euchre party and dance in the Parish Hall. Hie attendance was unusually large, amongst those present being tho members of the school committee and the school staff. The card tournament was first proceeded with, nine games being played, the prize winners tieing —Ladies, Mis? Newman; gentlemen, Mr E. Tarbotton; High School pupils, girls, Eileen Shaw; boys, Tom Alaynei. An excellent supper was then dispensed, after whicn dancing was indulged in. music being supplied by Miss Myra Colville, Miss Davidson and Mr V. Hessell (Timaru). Mr Grant very capably discharged the duties of M.O. During the evening Mr Malcolm contributed two vocal items, which were greatly appreciated. It is expected that a sum of £lO will be available lor the sports uniforms.

SERVICE RECOGNISED. At the social organised by Temuka District High Scnool, occasion was taken to recognise the long and faithful services of Mr E. Sanders, who had seived on the school committee com timiously for twenty-five years, and retired at the end of last term, after . completing a year as chairman. , ! .Mr C. L. Eraser, chairman of tho school ('committee, -stated that when Mr Sanders h:ul intimated that lie did not seek re-election, it was felt that they could not allow a service of twenty-live years in the causeof education to go without being recognised. Mr Sanders had never been a man for the limelight, but had been a solid worker throughout his long term on the committee. From tho quiet and unassum- . ing manner in which he went about his work, it was plainly evident that he had a natural regard for the welfare ot children. i Mr R. Malcolm, headmaster, said that Mr Sanders was a man 'who got the work done and did 110 b talk about it He was sure that all would join in wishing Mr Sanders a liappy and comfortable time for the rest of hw life, Air A. E. Smith said that lie had served on tho committee with Mr Sam ders for the past live years, and no one could have taken more interest in the work than Air Sanders. His record of twenty-five years continuous service was a great one, and he was not retiring on account of old age, but just to l(Tt the younger generation tako charge. , The Mayor, on behalf of the people ot the district, then presented Aft Sanders with an oak Alorris chair and a Loeuo pipe, and in doing so, he referred in "■lowing terms to Air Sanders’ twentylive years service'. He hoped that Aft Sanders would be spared many years to sit in the chair and smoke the pipe. Air Sanders, who was greeted with loud applause, said that he felt that ha did not deserve all that had been said. Whatever he had done was lor the sake of the children, coupled' with a desire ti make Temuka hotter. He wished to thank the past and present members of the committee and staff, for then; courtesy to hint on all occasions, thirty seven vears ago lemuka was not much of a place, but it had made good pro m-ess since then, and lie hoped that it vould always be his home.
