NATIONAL ANTHEM.
WANTED FOR AUSTRALIA. By Cable—Pross Association —Copyright. (Received 5.3 p.m., June 27.) MELBOURNE, June 27. A unique scene occurred at a sitting of the House of Representatives. Mr Yates, advocating the adoption of an Australian National Anthem, declared that the' Australians in the war, had to content themselves with ragtime tunes. He added that if the chairman gave him permission, he would demonstrate the merits of a fine anthem, namely, “The Song of Australia.’’ Urged on by T tho Opposition, Mr Yates sang the first verse of the song, his Labour colleagues joining in the chorus.
Later when the Speaker took the chair, Mr Bruce protested against tho scene.
