PUBLIC LIBRARY: The question- was considered of providing housing accommodation for the librarian. At the : previous meeting of the Council a letter had been received from the secretary of the library, drawing attention to the low state of their funds, and suggesting that the Council should utilise the existing building for a librarian’s cottage. Councillor Logan said there had been an error of judgment made, when the plans were drawn up, in not providing for a librarian’s and caretaker’s resi-

dence at the back of the building. Eventually they would have to make

arrangements for a caretaker for the town hall, and a librarian, and it would cheaper in the long run to spend £SOO or £6OO now for a residence to serve the dual capacity. Councillor Logan met with no support, and it was decided to approve of the architect’s plans. Councillor Sherratt moved, and Councillor Davison seconded, that the Library Committee be asked to take the 1 necessary steps to vacate the library buildings, to allow building operations to commence. Failing the committee being unable to make this arrangement, the Council will have to close the library, until the opening of the new building.
