A TERRIBLE DEATH.

ENTANGLED WITH SHAFTING. FATALITY AT BRICKWORKS. A shocking fatality took place at tho South Canterbury brickworks in College Road, at noon yesterday, when Ruben Ernest Lamond, an engineer in the employ ol tho Company, lost his life under circumstances unusually iricho and distressing. Before cutting oil the power it is ihc usual practice at the works to disconnect the belting running from tho counter-shaft to the big brick press, this operation usually being accomplished by means of a piece of timber. It is presumed that Indore blowing tho noon day whistle, the deceased leit tho engine room, and in attempting to re move tho belting, which is only a small one, by means of his hands or feet, became caught in the belt and whippet 1 round and round the shalt. The shaft would be turning at 108 revofouudations placed a lew feet apart, and rising to a height of about two or three feet from the ground. At the moment when the unfortunate^ man be came entangled in the belting the shaft would he turning out 108 revolutions per minute, and at this speed the terrible injuries which ttete inflicted can easily he realised. ’The first intimation ot the accident was received bv Mr W.
