FAIRHALL DEFEATS VOLAIRE SENSATIONAL OPENING. By Telegraph—Press Association.
DUNEDIN, June 25. A professional 15-round contest between Tommy Fairhall and Eugene Volnire, for a purse of £l5O, went the full distance, Fairhall winning comfortably on points. The opening round produced a sensational incident. Half way through, Volaire connected with a solid left to Fairhall’s jaw. The Australian fell flat on bis back, his head striking tire floor with considerable force. He managed to sit up at the count of six, and got to his fee-t at eight. He staggered to tho ropes, where he leaned helpless. Volaire then lost bis head and rushed in to finish him off. He rained blows home while Fairhall W|s against the ropes. At last the* Australian staggered across the ring, where the Frenchman again got him on the ropes. From there lie staggered to bis own corner, Volaire punching himself to a standstill. Fairball then literally fell into a clinch and hung on, the gong saving him. Had Volaire not become rattled be must have won the fight in the first round. Medical opinion was that Fairhall was at least unconscious for the next two rounds, 'the Australian himself stated that he did not wake up till the eighth round. In the fight between Andy Alfords and Laeliie McDonald (10 rounds for a £25 purse), McDonald won comfortably on points.
F. Zimmerman, the Canadian l.gbtheavvweight boxer, returned to Timarii yesterday to prepare for the postponed contest with E. Barker. 3be Canadian states that be lias fully recovered from the injury lie met with some weeks ago.
