Mr Donald Cameron (Dunedin), and Mr J. Yeitch (chief telegraph engineer for Otago), passed through Timaru yesterday by express for the north. Mr F. J. Rolleston, M.P., for Timaru, and Mr J. Bitchener, M.P.; for Waitaki, were passengers by the express for Christchurch yesterday, < n their way to Wellington for the opening of Parliament. His many friends will be pleased to learn that Mr T. D. Burnett, M.t., for Temuka, is now making very satis factory progress towards recovery from his recent operation. It is expected that he will be able to leave Stafford Hospital, in Dunedin, for his home, in a week or ten days. Mr Robert Irwin, headmaster of the Hampton Street School, Nelson, lias been appointed headmaster of Queen a Park School, Wanganui. Mr Irwin has been attached to the Nelson School for a year and two months, and has been a headmaster for a period of 19 years. Mr Irwin, who is a native of Timaru; was headmaster of several countryschools in South Canterbury. The Melanesian Mission Board at Auckland has received a cablegram announcing the death on 18tli June, of the Rev. R. C. M. Sprott, missionary in charge of the Pugot district, Ysabl, Solomon Islands. The deceased, who had been ten years on the mission field, was a nephew of the Rev. Dr. Sprott. Bishop of Wellington.

Settlers of Rosebrook and Hadlow met on Tuesday night to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs D. Kerr, whu have sold their farm and intend to live in Timaru. Mr Redway, who presided, spoke of the good qualities rt Mr and Mrs Kerr, and expressed the regret of tlie people of ttie dist-ncu, that they were leaving. Mr J. -JMclCeown was then called upon to make the presentation, the gifts consisting of a handsome sideboard for Mrs Iveu. and a Loewe pipe for Mr Kerr. Mr McKeown, in handing over the guts, spoke in complimentary terms ot lie recipients, and wished them long lif-J and happiness. His remarks were indorsed by Mrs Loonies, and Messrs Campbell, Blamires, Mattingle.v, Matnioson, and Hogg, and appropriate acknowledgment tv as made of the gifts and good wishes. During the evening musical items were given by Messrs McPherson. McKeown, Watt, Redwav, Blamires, and Loonies. The ladies provided an appetising supper.
