RUGBY MATTERS.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.’’ ; Sir,—Followers, of Rugby liad no dilfieulty in discerning the comuig fiasco as it eventuated at tlio Athletic Grounds on Saturday last. Rugby is no baby—it is 'the people’s one big sport and requires at all times firm administration. Our referees have admittedly a hard fight in fulfilling weekly engagements, but their evident policy of giving the control of senior matches to those who are unable to hold the confidence of players in pub lie will surely kill the flow of good coin at the turnstiles. The spectacle of footballers controlling the game, with the incessant cackling of team captains, is degrading. Enthusiasts pay good money to witness the weekly matches, and they arc entitled to Tie very best. The players take the risk of severe injury for the love of the game, and if the powers that bo are not alive to the situation then the clubs should exercise their power and requisition requirements in the interests of all. Another matter of HI importance is the conduct of certain individuals who invade the stadium seats and bellow from the start to finish of tho game. A littlo banter is expected, but the hurling of insults at the referee and'players alike, as one person did last Saturday for f'O minutes, requires curbing, and should be dealt with by tho management.—l am, etc., .
