BEATEN TO DEATH.
u. i— • rjfltr - AN AMERICAN MURDERED. SUMMARY WESTERN JUSTICE. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. PEKIN, June 24.
In connection with the death of the American (Mr Hawley) at Wanhsien, the Guild Authority promised to redouble efforts to prevent the molestation of foreigners. Mr Hawley lived fifteen years in China, representing a British firm engaged in river transport of wood and oil by steamers. The junkmen, however, resented the intrusion of machinery into the leisurely life of the river, and beat Mr Hawley to death on the beach. The commander of the warship Cockchafer, trained guns on the city, and compelled the military authorities to walk humbly in Mr Hawley’s funeral cortege, after which the populace witnessed the shooting of the junkmen. The United States Consul declares that the inhabitants and; military authorties at Wanhsien appear thoroughly awed by the example of summary Western justice.
