CASUALTIES.
YOUNG MAN INJURED. HIS CONDITION SERIOUS. A young man named* Ndrman A. Gould, 22 years of age, was seriously injured in the railway cleaning "sheas at Timaru on Friday evening, being crushed by the cowcatcher of an engine against the end of a cleaning pit. He Was removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition, and inquiries made at a late hour last night revealed that he was still unconscious. It is suspected that he is suffering from a fracture at the base of the skull, and owing to shock and concussion is in a dangerous condition. A fireman working on one of tbo engines in tlie shed at the time, about B p.m., noticed a slush lamp in front ot ■the cowcatcher of his engine. He found a hand grasping the lamp, the arm lying along the ground. He railed three companions, and they found Gould’s head jammed between the edge of tlie pit and the cowcatcher, - which was pressing against the back of tbo unconscious man’s skull, while his chest was lying on the pit-end and his feet dangled in the pit. Two of the men liekl Gould and a third shunted the engine back. A doctor was immediately summoned, and the injured man was carried on a stretcher to the hospital by way of the railway line. It was stated that no cry was heard from Gould when he was caught bv the engine, and no one. knew how it was that the engine moved. DROWNED IN WATER RACE.
Bv Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. Airs Edith Stanley, of Templeton, was found drowned in a water-race. A verdict of suicide while in a depressed mental state was returned.
