Before a th ird was- obtained, and with the game half through, darkness fell. Huge flares were lighted at each goal, and the match finished in tlfeir light. The scores were signalled by waving flaming sticks.

THE REFEREE ASSAULTED

At the conclusion of the League football match yesterday, a wild c : e monstration occurred among members in the pavilion. The referee (Mr T. McMahon) was assaulted. The trouble followed the ordering off of an Australian forward (Potter), allegedly for striking an opponent. When the referee left the field To was mobbed, and a free fight was narrowly averted. Potter and Bacon (English three-quarters) went to the referee’s assistance, and with tlie arrival of a squad of police the trouble cooled off. i
