The Rev. T. F. Taylor, of Wellington, arrived in Timaru yesterday. Sir Joseph Ward passed through Timaru by the south-bound express yesterday. Mr A. Varney, national secretary oi the Y.M.C.A. arrived from Dunedin vestordav. He will leave by the noi th express ‘to-da.v for Christchurch, cn route for Wellington.
A cable message from London says it is understood that Admiral Sir Charles Madden is being mentioned as a likely successor to Lord Jellicoe, as GovernorGeneral of New Zealand. A Press Association message from Wellington says that Messrs A S. Malcolm (formerly M.P-, for Clutha), and Vernon Reed (formerly MIL, tor tlw Bay of Islands), have been appointed to the Legislative Council. Mr L. J. Collins, who was yesterday appointed couutv clerk lor the 44 aimate County, is only 21 years of age, and has been in the 44 annate Council's office for close on two years. Prior to that he served six years with the Geraldine County Council. Mr N. M. Orbed, who is leaving Christchurch shortly to take up his residence in Timaru, was entertained at luncheon in Christchurch on Alondav, bv members of tile Canterbury Automobile Association. Mr A. D. Hobson, president of the Association, mv.scnud Air Orbc-11 with a silver pencil. At the conclusion of yesterday's business, die 44’aiinate County Council discussed the question of the appointment: of a county clerk and engineer. Air J. C. AieLaughlan, who has held the dual posit ion for the past two years, handed ui his resignation, having accepted a oosition in the North Island. The Council decided to make two separate appointments. The assistant clerk. Aji L. J. Collins, was appointed county clerk, and applications will he invited for the position of engineer, at LoUO „er annum.
