AFRICANS DEFEAT ESSEX.

By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, June 20. Essex, in the second innings against Africa, made 345 for nine wickets and declared (Douglas 40 not out). Carter took five wickets for 70. The Africans in the second innings made 239 for nine (Nourse 35, Hands 04). Lounden took four wickets for 82. The Africans won. Received. 5.5 p.m., June 22. LONDON, June 20. Essex in the second innings, added 49 runs in 6 7 minutes (Douglas 40). The Africans had a difficult task on a wearing wicket, which troubled the batsmen. No tea adjournment was taken. Douglas bowled on the leg theory to keep the runs down. Hands played an aggressive innings for 64. The finish wa.s exciting. When Bissett, the last man, went in, thirty-one runs were required. Bissett made twenty-four in eight hits in eight minutes, including a sixer. He made twelve off the last, three halls, and just beat the clock. SOUTH AFRICA v. HAMPSHIRE. Received 5.5 p.m.. -June 22.
