COAL AND BLANKET FUND.

A SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT

Thera was a packed house at the Grand Theatre last evening, when an entertainment in aid of tiie Mayor’s Goal and Blanket Fund was presented by local artists. The “Faust” Ballet by Gounod, played with expression and taste by a well balanced orchestra comprising Mrs Mansel, Miss K. Byrne, and Messrs McConachy and Penkeith, proved a very suitable overture. The “Two Grenadiers” by Schumann, was well rendered by Mr F. Ryan, who was called upon to contribute an extra item “Salaam,” which was also well received. A violin solo entitled “Poem,” by Zdenko Fibich, contributed by Miss K. Byrne, proved a very dainty olfering, and for an extra number, which was insist-ent-y demanded, Lemaire’s “Adantino” was pleasingly contributed. Miss Henstock, a soprano, new to Timaru audiences, in her opening item “Mountain Lovers,” demonstrated splendid powers of interpretation. An extra number; “If I might only come to You,” was also very well received. Mr G. H. Andrews was in splendid voice, and “Gloria,” a semi-religious number, was delivered with fine dramatic effect. Mr Andrews was equally at home in “The Blind Ploughman,” which was also delivered in response to an appreciative recall. Two bracketed numbers, ‘ “Gently Lord, oil Gentle Leader,” and “A Brown Bird Singing” Miss Westmacott sang with fine expression and effect. A trio by “AUeyne” entitled “April’s Lady,” received splendid treatment at the hands of Mrs Mansel, Miss K. Byrne, and Miss ‘Ward. In response to an insistent recall Valse Parisian was also contributed. “I Love a Little Cottage,” .sung with nice expression by Mr N. Earl, proved a very popular number, ami in response to a clamorous recall. Mr Earl obliged with “She is Far from the Land.” Mrs X. D. Mangos accompanied the singers in her usual artistic manner.

As a result of the splendid attendance the Fund was augmented to the extent of £2-1. In thankinsx the performers, and the audience for their very liberal response, the Mayor (Mr G. J. "Wallace) referred to the yonerosily of the Directors of the Grand Theatre in offerin'* the use of the

Theatre, the manager and staff for giving their services; the Bristol On., for ' providing a piano and the organiser. Mr J. L. Mansell. for the splendid programme.
