ASHBURTON WINTER MEETING

MARRED BY RAIN. The Ashburton County Racing Club's winter meeting, which took the place of the autumn fixture (abandoned owing to the railway strike), opened in fine weather, but before the third race had been run, a cold rain blew up from the south, and continued for the rest of the day. The track was in’nice order when proceedings commenced, but it became heavy towards the close. The ground in front of the toialisator was churned up into a sea of mud, and altogether the conditions became rather depressing. The attendance was up to the average, and the fields were the largest seen on the course for many years, the smallest number of runners being nine in the Ashburton but the state of the ‘‘lawn” near the machine, seriously affected the volume of investments, the turnover for the seven races amounting to £10,071, against £13,514 for eight races on the first diy of last autumn meeting, an average decrease of about £450 per race. The success of extreme outsiders in the, first two events was a contributing cause, but it is reasonably certain that but for the unfortunate break in the weather, last year’s average would have been improved. Some very interesting racing was witnessed, although towards the close the horses and riders were so bespattered with rain and mud , that it became difficult to distinguish them in the dull light. The principal fiat race was annexed by the Tiinaru-owued, trained and ridden Guncase, and although he was not a public fancy, the victory appeared to be the most popular of the day. The resuscitation of steeplechasing at Ashburton proved to be a popular move, though the race lost some interest as a result of half the field either running or being carried off. It is doubtful, however, if the result was thereby affected, as Galwa-y appeared to win with* a -good deal in hand. , Royal Star, Le Forte and Red Kriss were prettv evenlv backed in the First Hurdles, which drew an unusually big field of ten. Flying Master showed the way over the, stand hurdle to Frisco Mail, Le ‘Forte then being last. Turn ir.g into tho back, the order was Flying Master, Roval Star. Frisco Mail; Red Kriss, but at the fiVe furlongs Likelihood had taken charge from Royal Star and Red Kriss. Royal Star fell neai the four furlongs, leaving Likelihood with a useful lead, and the Methven "elding ran round the home turn followed by I,e Forte. Bellrock and Red Kriss. Likelihood ran dowm the fence badlv. but on the flat showed too much speed for Le Forte, and won cqmfortabiy bv a long neck, Bellrock being five lengths further back, followed bv Red Kriss, Rom peso and Fort Regal. The winner was tho extreme outsider of the party, and returned a handsome dividend. ‘Golden Prince, who was making his first appearance after a lengthy spell, broke down after going about half a mile. Thorndale was installed favourite foT flic Novice Plate,. Coch-y-bondhu, Mud lark, Bonatic and Courcelette being the others in greatest demand. Olympia caused some delay at tlio start, but eventually a good despatch was effected. Thorndale led off from Marine and Mudlark, but before a furlong had been covered. Markie took charge, and led round the bend from Thorndale,, Mudlark, Courcelette and Adopted. Thorndale was in charge at the head of the straight, but a little, further on Adopted ran past him and stayed in' front to the .end, winning by half a length from Bonatic. who finished fast on the outside and defeated Thorndale for second money by a bit over a length. Sunnv Mae was fourth; just in front of Mudlark, Clarion and Markie. Adopted, who is home-trained at Lismofe. was one of tho unfancied division, and his backers collected a tliuiiiping dividend. A nice field of ten was saddled for the' Hack Steeplechase, The first race of tire kind to he run on the course for neatly thirty years. Paul Pry. promised to bo favourite at one stage of the betting, but the late money sent Galwav to the post of honour, Ruddy Gold being third in demand. 'Woodrow ran off at the first obstacle, and Taralga came to grief at the second, crossing •which Tainui 11., Sherlock, Galway and Blue Streak were at the, head of a bunch. Blue Streak and Sherlock raced together to the fence near the mile post, but Blue Streak ran off and carried ’ Sherlock with hint. The next jump saw’ Paul Pry slip outside the flags, and going up the back Tainui 11. and Ruddy Gold were clear of Galway and Tokomairiro. Ruddy Gold and Galway drew out at the bend, and ran to the final fence together. Galway w'as first over, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from the Oraritrained gelding, who w’as five or six lengths in advance of Tainui 11. Tokomafviro was a fair fourth, a long way in front- of Malincourt. Tho rider ot Tokomairiro was fined £1 for running inside a flag, and A. McMullan wa3 fined £1 for dismounting before being ordered to do so. I. Rask, rider of Sherlock, lodged a complaint against S. Dillon, Blue Streak’s jockey, for running him off, but Dillon’s explanation was accepted. The American gelding Direct Tod and tho Waimate three-year-old Generator, carried the public confidence in the Selma Trot, but neither took' any part in the finish. Generator broke up early and was last at the end of a furlong, and Direct Tod. squeezed out at the start. W’as never in the picture. Logic made play from Frank Dillon, Rebel, Bridget Lynn and Lady Minto, and going along the back Logic, Frank Dillon and Rebel were still holding their places. Rebel drew’ clear at the bend, and Tomkinson’s horse was never afterwards troubled, running homo three lengths ahead of Logic, with. Frank Dillon a dozen lengths back, doselv followed by Talent and "Winsome Melody. Rebel and Logic in the past, have been unreliable at the post, but both moved off smartly in yesterday’s race, and they had the final tussle to Lhomselves.

Clareina, Will Oakland and Radial were the prime fancies in the Ashburton Handicap. AVill Oakland and Guncase were first to break the line, and at the end of three furlongs, Guncasc was just in front of Will Oakland, Radial and Carmine. Guncase increased his advantage rounding the homo turn, and led into the straight with 'daylight separating him from AVi 1 1 Oakland'and Radial, Castellan and Carmine being at the head of the others. Gunease was never caught, and kicked along to the finish, scored hv about three lengths from Radial, who shook Will Oakland off at the. distance, but was only a neck in front of him. at the judge's box. Carmine was fourth and CasTellan next. Gunease, who is at I his best in the mud, was. steered by Arthur Trilford, and was greeted with cheers on returning to the enclosure. Ten paraded for the mile and a cpiarter hack event, and six of them were fairly well hacked. Carpentier, who won a double at AVashdykc last month, was the popular choice, with Sartist, in more demand than Kukume and AhewpoinL. Agnola, Carpentier and Sartist ran in line for the first bit, but racing along the hack, Sartist and Agnola were attended by Sunny Mac. At the bend Sartist and Agnola were still in charge, with Carpentier leading the next hunch. Agnola was done with at Lhc home turn, where Kukume commenced to make up ground. Sartist had a good lead a furlong from home, but bis rider appealed to take tilings a trifle easily near the. finis]), and had to get to 'work again to stall off Kukume and Carpentier, the three flashing past the judge, with little more than heads between them. Viewpoint was a moderate fourth, then came Gay Life atui Rigel. The fact that Dancing Days was bnr- } dcued with 10.13 in heavy going, did

not daunt her admirers, and the Oamaru mare was backed down to a short price, being entrusted with twice as much money as Solierite or Fcriao, who carried 324 and 323 tickets. Whariedale, integrity and Dancing Days were qinchest to begin, and at the home turn Wharfedalc was leading irom the topweight, the pair being clear of the others. Wliarfedale held his place to the finish,' and claimed the verdict by a length from Dancing Days, who ran a sterling race, under her big weigut. Solfente, who drew’ No. 1 berth, hut W’as snowed in for most of the trip, finished w’ith a great run on the outside, and secured third money from Miss Minerva and Bella Lake. It look ed as if his failure to get ok well cost the Washdykc three-.vear-old the race. Results w’ere as follows : FIRST HURDLES, of 2UO sovs; ] j miles. 10 S. E.
