LABOUR IN NAURU.

Mr Bruce, in the House of Representatives, said Chinese labourers at Nauru were paid 22s monthly, but in addition there was a bonus of 4s monthly, free food, housing and clothes. Coolies and Kanakas worked 54 hours a week, Chinese mechanics 48* hours, and Europeans 47 hours. The total population consisted of 603 Chinese, 1179 Nauruans, 110 whites, and one Chinese woman. The annual salaries amounted to £3,500.
