RESPONSIBILITIES OF FARMERS. By Telegraph—Pi'ess Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 20. After a hearing extended over seven days the case in which Robert Ivetr McCondless (farmer of Parnassus) claimed £1913 10s, and Ahster Ma.colm McFarlane. £4OOO, from Norman Rutherford, of Mendip Hills, for damage alleged to have been done by a grass fire, which spread from plaintiff s property, was concluded in the Supremo Court to-day, the jury finding in plaintiffs by a three-fourths majority for lesser Amounts than those claimed. Mr Justice' Adams was on she bench, and there was a common jurv of twelve. MaoFnrlane was awarded £SOO damages, and MeCaudless £526. ~An application by counsel for defendant to move for a non-suit, and a new trial on the ground that Hie verdict was against the weight of evidence, was granted.
