GENERAL HERTZOG WINS.

Landslide to Nationalists.

VICTORY FOR THE PACT! By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. CAPETOWN, June 18. The state of the parties is:— South African Party 51 Labour . Nationalists ..* ..« 55 Independent 1 The South African Party gained five seats, Labour eight, the Nationalists 13, and Independent one. There are still ten seats incomplete, of which four are expected to go to the South Africans and six to the Nationalists. Sir H. Burton, Minister of Finance, was defeated. A feature of the elections is the landslide to the Pact in the Transvaal. In the Cape and Natal Provinces the Government fully held its own. General Smuts, in a message, gives expression to the hope that he will still continue to lead the party.

Tho defeat of the Preference resolutions in the British Parliament caused great disappointment. It is almost certain to be seized upon by the new Government as a pretext for abolishing British preference in the South African Union. Such preference has always been opposed by the Hertzog party. •Now that a Hertzog Government is a certainty the whole Press convey congratulations, and express the hope that all parties will help the new Government.
